What is HSN Code?

Harmonized System of Nomenclature — an internationally standardized system of names and numbers to classify traded products, used in GST for goods classification.

How It Works

HSN codes were developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO) and are used by over 200 countries. In India's GST system, HSN codes classify goods for taxation. The first 2 digits indicate the chapter, 4 digits the heading, 6 digits the subheading, and India adds 2 more digits for detailed classification. Correct HSN codes are mandatory on GST invoices and determine the applicable tax rate.

Real-World Example

Rice has HSN code 1006. Basmati rice specifically is 10063020. This 8-digit code tells customs and GST authorities exactly what product is being traded and what tax rate applies (5% GST for rice).
