What this screen is for
Categories are how the materials library stays navigable once it grows. This screen lists them with their name, slug, optional icon and the number of materials in each, and lets you add, rename or delete one.
When to use it
Set up a small set of categories before uploading much material, and add to them as new subject areas appear. Think before deleting: a category in use is the way learners currently find those materials.
What you see on this screen
The table has four columns:
- Category — the name, with its icon where one is set
- Slug — the short form used in addresses and filters, generated from the name
- Materials — how many items are filed under it
- Actions
Where none exist, the table reads "No categories yet. Create one to get started."
New Category, opened with Add Category, is a short inline form taking a Name (required) and an optional Icon, with Create and Cancel.
Filters and actions
There are no filters here; the list is short by design. Back to Library returns to the materials list. Add Category opens the create form, and each row can be edited or deleted.
Deleting asks you to confirm, and shows the category's name and how many materials it holds, warning that those items will become uncategorised. They are not deleted with it, but they do lose the grouping learners were using to find them.
Status values
A category carries no status and cannot be turned off. It either exists or it does not, which is why deleting one has the effect described above rather than simply hiding it. The Slug is generated from the name and is what the library's category filter matches on, so renaming a category changes the label learners read without disturbing what is filed under it.
