Forex Gain/Loss

Realised exchange rate gains and losses over a chosen period, with the totals and the journal entry line behind each one.

What this screen is for

When a foreign currency transaction settles at a different rate from the one it was recorded at, the difference is a realised gain or loss. This report totals those over a date range — total gain, total loss and the net — and lists each one with its date, the journal entry it belongs to, its description and whether it was a gain or a loss.

When to use it

Use it when reviewing the cost of trading in another currency, and when reconciling the exchange difference account. It covers realised differences only, meaning transactions that have actually settled.

What you see on this screen

Three cards:

  • Total Gain — every favourable exchange difference in the period added together
  • Total Loss — every unfavourable one added together
  • Net Gain/Loss — the two set against each other; a negative figure means losses exceeded gains

The table lists one row per posting:

  • Date — the date of the journal entry the difference was posted on
  • Journal Entry — the entry number it belongs to
  • Description — the line narration on that entry
  • Type — Gain or Loss
  • Amount — the size of the difference

Every row is a line already posted to your exchange difference account, so the three cards add up to what that account moved by over the period.

Filters and actions

Show Filters opens From Date and To Date, each applying as you change it, with Reset to clear them. This screen only reports; it posts nothing. Where it is empty for a period, either nothing settled at a different rate or no foreign currency transactions were settled at all.
