About Chapter 04

Chapter 04 of the Harmonized System of Nomenclature (HSN) is titled “Dairy produce; birds' eggs; natural honey; edible products of animal origin, not elsewhere specified or included”. It is part of Section I, Live Animals & Animal Products, together with Chapter 01 (live animals), Chapter 02 (meat and edible meat offal), Chapter 03 (fish and crustaceans) and Chapter 05 (products of animal origin).

The chapter is divided into 10 headings, from 0401 (milk and cream, not concentrated nor containing added sugar or other sweetening matter) to 0410 (insects and other edible products of animal origin, not elsewhere specified or included). The headings with the most codes that people search for are milk and cream, concentrated or containing added sugar or other sweetening matter (0402), cheese and curd (0406), birds' eggs (0408), yogurt (0403) and butter and other fats and oils derived from milk; dairy spreads (0405).

Note 2 defines butter for heading 0405: natural, whey or recombined butter derived only from milk, with a milk fat content of not less than 80% and not more than 95% by weight.

Every heading is listed below. Under each are the codes that have their own page on Laabam One, 11 codes in this chapter, each with its full classification: its chapter, heading and sub-heading, and the codes beside it.

Every code in this chapter begins with 04: four digits make a heading, six a sub-heading, and eight a tariff item of India's Customs Tariff. How many of those digits a GST tax invoice shows depends on the business, not the goods: under Notification No. 78/2020 – Central Tax, from 1 April 2021, four digits where aggregate turnover in the previous financial year was up to ₹5 crore, and six above it. Up to ₹5 crore, the code may be left off invoices to unregistered buyers.

No GST rate is shown here. GST rates were revised in September 2025, and a rate appears on this site only once it has been checked against the CBIC rate notifications.
